The dunes near Zagora are closer at about 365 km (6 to 7 hours), which makes the 2-day Zagora overnight the fastest desert option. Is it better to leave from Marrakech or from Fes?
Both reach the same dunes at Merzouga. From Marrakech the drive is longer but more scenic — the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Aït Ben Haddou and the road of a thousand kasbahs. From Fes it is shorter (about 7–8 hours) via Ifrane and the Ziz gorges. If Marrakech is your base, starting here is the natural choice; if you are touring both cities, a one-way crossing between them is the smartest option of all.
