Why Essaouira

Essaouira is not the Sahara — it's the cool, salt-aired opposite, and that makes it a favourite way to wind down before or after a desert trip. Three hours west of Marrakech (the same city that launches the dune routes), this 18th-century fortress port offers Atlantic breakers, a small walkable blue-and-white medina and Morocco's freshest grilled seafood — a soothing contrast to days of sand and silence. Travellers often run a loop: the desert dunes first for the drama, then Essaouira to decompress by the ocean. The argan road on the way in even links back to the same argan country you cross heading south.

What to see

Highlights of Essaouira.

01

The Skala ramparts

Portuguese-built cannon walls overlooking the Atlantic, used as the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones.

02

The fishing port & seafood grills

Pick fish off the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — Morocco's freshest seafood, no question.

03

Argan cooperatives

Visit a women's co-op on the road in from Marrakech and see argan oil pressed by hand from the kernels.

04

Sidi Kaouki & Oualidia

Long empty beaches south, and an oyster-farming lagoon north.

Practical notes.

  • Getting there: 3h private transfer from Marrakech (the desert gateway), or 1h flight from Casablanca
  • Weather: Cool and windy year-round — a refreshing break from the desert heat; bring a light jacket even in summer
  • Festival: Gnaoua World Music Festival, late June — the same Gnaoua tradition you'll hear at the desert camps

FAQ

Essaouiracommon questions.

Should I add Essaouira before or after the Sahara?+

Either works well, but most travellers do the desert first for the big experience, then come to Essaouira to slow down by the ocean. Both connect through Marrakech, the main desert departure city, so it fits neatly onto a dune itinerary.

Is Essaouira a desert destination?+

No — it's the honest opposite: a breezy, cool Atlantic port. We include it precisely as a contrast to the Sahara. If you want sand dunes, that's Merzouga or Erg Chigaga in the deep south, not the coast.
