A field note
What we tell every first-time Sahara traveller before they book — honest, specific, no top-10 filler.
The desert has two long windows. Mid-September to mid-November is our favourite: the sand has shed its summer heat, the Erg Chebbi nights are cool enough for a blanket, and the dunes glow copper at sunset. March to early May is the second window — warm days, clear skies over Merzouga and Erg Chigaga, and the palmeraies of the Drâa valley still green from winter.
Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is the postcard: 150-metre dunes a short walk from the camps, easiest to reach, best for a first Sahara night and a sunrise camel trek. Erg Chigaga (M'Hamid) is wilder and more remote — a 4x4 crossing, far fewer camps, true silence. We send first-timers to Chebbi and return travellers to Chigaga.
A well-built private desert week for two — a private driver-guide, two nights in a luxury Erg Chebbi camp, camel treks and a few standout meals — generally lands between $2,400 and $4,800 per person, all in on the ground. Private 4x4 Chigaga crossings and signature camps move that number; longer routes and shoulder season bring it down. We will always tell you the truth before you book.
Sahara moments
The Sahara is small details done a thousand years in a row — mint tea poured high, a camel's slow sway, silence so deep you hear the dunes. A few we'll quietly fold into your trip, and a few we'll teach you to recognise before they pass.
Diyafa
The first glass bitter as life, the second strong as love, the third sweet as death. You'll be offered tea at every door — it is rude to refuse the first pour, and rude to drink only one.
Hammam
Public or private, it's a weekly ritual not a spa treatment. Black soap, eucalyptus steam, an aggressive scrub with a kessa glove. You leave a different person.
Adhan
From the Koutoubia, the Karaouine, every village minaret — the call begins at dawn and ends after dusk. It is not background noise; it is the clock the country keeps.
Riad
From the alley, a plain door. Inside, a tiled courtyard, an orange tree, a fountain, four storeys of carved cedar around it. Moroccan luxury is hidden by design.
Souq
Start at one-third the asked price, settle around half. Walk away once — they will follow if your number is fair. It is theatre, not warfare, and ends with mint tea.
Sahara
Deep in the erg, the engine stops. No traffic, no voices, no insects — just a faint hiss of sand over the ridge. The dunes cool slowly after dark; by midnight the stones release the last of the sun.

October to April is the prime Sahara window — comfortable days in Merzouga and Erg Chigaga, brilliant stargazing and cold but magical camp nights. Spring and autumn are the all-round sweet spots for combining the dunes with the cities and the Atlas.
PlanningYes — Morocco is among the safest, most visitor-friendly countries in North Africa, and the desert routes south of Marrakech and Fes are well-travelled, well-organised and reassuringly calm. Most day-to-day friction is petty souk hustle and overcharging in the cities, all easily handled.
PracticalFor a desert trip, pack for two climates in one bag: hot, dusty dune days and surprisingly cold camp nights. Breathable layers, one genuinely warm top, a scarf against blowing sand, and slip-on shoes you don't mind filling with grit cover almost everything.
