It depends on how much ground you want to cover. A single city like Marrakech or Fes works well as a long weekend of three or four days. To pair two imperial cities, or a city with the coast, most travellers allow around a week. If you want to add the Sahara, budget extra time: the desert sits a long way south of the main cities, with most of a day's drive over the High Atlas in each direction, so a desert loop typically needs three days at minimum on its own.

Reaching the dunes is the slow part. From Marrakech, the classic desert loop to Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is usually three days and two nights, because the drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and through the Dadès and Todra gorges takes the better part of a day each way. Erg Chigaga, reached via Zagora and M'Hamid, is closer but still a full undertaking. If you'd rather not double back, many itineraries run one-way between Marrakech and Fes with the desert in the middle.

Most days mix guided time with free time. A city day often pairs a morning with a private local guide — the medina, a historic monument, a workshop — with an open afternoon to wander or rest. Travel days between regions are built around the drive, with scenic stops along the way rather than long unbroken stretches. Desert days end with a camp before sunset and start early for sunrise. Nothing is rigid; you can slow any day down.

Earlier is better for high season (spring and autumn) and for holidays, when good riads and guides fill up, but shorter lead times can often still be arranged.
