Why Marrakech
For most travellers heading to the dunes, Marrakech is where the desert journey begins. It's the busiest launch pad for Sahara expeditions — a 90-minute flight from most European capitals, and the northern end of the great southern road that climbs the Tizi n'Tichka pass and drops through Ouarzazate, the kasbah road and the gorges toward Merzouga and Erg Chigaga. Spend a day or two inside the ochre walls before you point south: the UNESCO-listed medina, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square at dusk, the Koutoubia minaret, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the cobalt Majorelle gardens. Then load the 4x4 and let the city give way to argan plains, then mountains, then sand.

How long in Marrakech before heading to the Sahara?+
One or two nights is plenty to see the medina and major monuments before pointing south. Most desert routes leave Marrakech early on day two or three for the long drive over the Atlas to Ouarzazate and the dunes.
Can I reach the Sahara dunes from Marrakech?+
Yes — Marrakech is the main departure point. The real dunes at Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) are a 9-hour drive split over two days via the kasbah road; Erg Chigaga is reached via Zagora and M'Hamid. Day trips from the city only reach the Agafay stone desert, not the Sahara.
What is the best month to start a desert trip from Marrakech?+
October–April for the desert: warm days in the city (22–28°C in spring and autumn) and comfortable conditions in the dunes. Avoid July–August, when the south can exceed 45°C and many desert camps close.
