Why Dadès & Todra Gorges

The Dadès and Todra gorges are the scenic heart of the journey to the Sahara — the spectacular middle act between Ouarzazate and the dunes of Merzouga, and a near-essential overnight on the desert road. The kasbah road threads two of Morocco's grandest canyons: the Todra narrows to a 300-metre slot barely 10 metres wide, beloved of climbers; the Dadès twists through rose-coloured rock past the surreal 'monkey-finger' formations and its photogenic hairpin switchbacks. In between lie palm oases, earthen kasbahs and, in May, the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna. Break the long drive here, then continue east through the Tafilalt to Erg Chebbi.
