Ouarzazate is the gateway to the south, the town where the desert begins in earnest. Sitting just over the Tizi n'Tichka pass from Marrakech, it is the staging post for every Sahara route — the road forks here for Merzouga and Erg Chebbi one way, the Drâa Valley and Erg Chigaga the other. Forty minutes back toward the mountains stands Aït Ben Haddou, the most famous fortified ksar in Morocco: a UNESCO-listed earthen citadel on the old caravan route to Timbuktu, and the backdrop of Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. For desert travellers it's the perfect first night south — your introduction to the mudbrick kasbah architecture that defines the whole desert road ahead.
