From M'Hamid the tarmac ends and a 4x4 takes over for the crossing to camp — usually around two hours of off-road driving over stone desert and sand. Distances and times are approximate and depend on stops, weather and dune conditions, but you are never doing the whole route in a single sitting.

Day one crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and on to Ouarzazate for the night.
