Morocco's two great seas of Saharan dunes — Erg Chebbi near Merzouga and Erg Chigaga near M'hamid — offer very different desert experiences. One is accessible and dramatic; the other is remote and wild. This honest comparison helps you choose the right ergs for your trip.

The smaller but taller erg, with dunes rising to around 150 m near Merzouga. A paved road runs right to the dune base, so camps are easy to reach and you can be on the sand within minutes — the classic postcard Sahara.
A vast, lower field of dunes beyond M'hamid, reached only by 1.5–2 hours of off-road 4x4 (or a longer camel trek). Far fewer visitors, no tarmac and a genuine end-of-the-road feeling make it the wilder, more immersive choice.
Erg Chebbi/Merzouga is about 8–9 hours from Marrakech or roughly 7 from Fes, usually as a 3-day trip. Erg Chigaga is reached via Ouarzazate and the Draa valley to M'hamid, then 4x4 — slightly closer to Marrakech but with the rough final leg.
Erg Chebbi has many camps from simple to luxury and more fellow travellers, so quiet spots take a little effort. Erg Chigaga's camps are spread thin across a big area, so it feels emptier and darker for stargazing.
Short on time or travelling with kids or limited mobility? Erg Chebbi is easier and just as photogenic. Want remoteness, fewer people and a sense of true wilderness, and don't mind a rough drive? Erg Chigaga rewards the effort.
On longer loops some itineraries link both via the Draa, but most travellers pick one. Either delivers camel rides, dune sunrises and a night under the desert sky.
Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga, has tall dunes and is reached by paved road, making it accessible and popular. Erg Chigaga, beyond M'hamid, is a larger, remoter dune field reached only by 4x4 or camel, so it is wilder and far less visited.
Erg Chebbi is easier: a paved road runs to the dunes near Merzouga, so camps are quick to reach. Erg Chigaga requires 1.5–2 hours of off-road driving from M'hamid, making it the more remote option.
Neither is objectively better. Choose Erg Chebbi for accessibility, tall photogenic dunes and easy camps; choose Erg Chigaga for remoteness, fewer crowds and a wilder, more immersive Sahara experience.
