Overview
Skip the crowds for Erg Chigaga — the tallest, most remote dunes in Morocco, reached by a true off-road 4x4 crossing from the desert outpost of M'Hamid.
Erg Chigaga is the Sahara almost no one sees: a 40km belt of dunes beyond the last paved road at M'Hamid, in the deep south past Zagora and the Draa Valley. Reaching it means a genuine off-road 4x4 crossing of stone desert (reg) and palm oases — there is no shortcut, which is exactly why it stays wild and quiet.
You travel by private 4x4 over the High Atlas and down the longest oasis valley in Morocco, then off the tarmac to a Berber camp deep in the sand. With two nights at Chigaga there is time for a camel sunset, a sunrise dune climb, and an optional run out to the Iriki dry lake bed — all at the pace of a small private group.
