Why Agafay Desert
Agafay is the closest thing to the desert you can reach from Marrakech in an afternoon — a rolling, rock-strewn moonscape just 40 minutes from the city, with the snow-capped High Atlas behind. It's important to be honest: this is a stone desert of khaki hills, not the Saharan sand sea. The real dunes lie nine hours south at Merzouga. But when a dune trip won't fit the dates, Agafay delivers much of the romance — a lantern-lit camp, a camel silhouette, the Atlas turning pink at dusk — for a fraction of the travel, and it makes a fine warm-up the night before a longer desert drive.

If you can't spare the days for the Sahara, absolutely. The Agafay delivers a desert sunset, camps and camel rides 40 minutes from Marrakech — ideal for a short trip — though it's rocky hills rather than sand dunes.
No — Agafay is a stone desert of rolling rocky hills, not Saharan sand dunes. It's beautiful at sunset and very convenient, but for classic dunes you need Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) or Erg Chigaga.
