Why Tangier
Tangier is many desert travellers' first step onto African soil — a 35-minute ferry from Tarifa, and the top of the overland route down to Fes and the Fes–Merzouga desert road. It's the polished northern gateway: the strait, the kasbah, and an international past that drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. It has nothing of the Sahara about it, which is the appeal — a cosmopolitan, sea-cooled start (or finish) before the long journey south. From here it's 2h to blue Chefchaouen and 4h (or 2h by train) to Fes, where the desert road begins.

Can I start a Sahara desert trip from Tangier?+
Yes — Tangier is the natural top of an overland route for travellers crossing from Spain. From here you head south through Chefchaouen to Fes, then run the Fes–Merzouga desert road to the dunes. It's a longer journey than starting in Marrakech, but it lets you see the whole country north to desert.
How long do you need in Tangier?+
Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch — before pointing south toward Fes and the desert.
