Why Dakhla
Dakhla is the Sahara at the ocean's edge — the one place in Morocco where the desert and the sea meet head-on, the dunes rolling right down to a 40 km turquoise lagoon. It's a peninsula town on the far-southern coast, roughly 1,700 km below Casablanca, where the persistent alizé trade winds have made the flat lagoon one of the world's premier kitesurf spots from November to April. For desert travellers it offers a completely different face of the Sahara from the inland ergs at Merzouga and Chigaga: the same endless hammada and dune fields, but with flamingos in the shallows, desert sunsets over water, and the finest fresh fish on the coast at the port. It's reached by a short flight rather than the kasbah road — a deep-south desert escape in its own right.
What to see
The Dakhla lagoon offers flat, shin-to-waist-deep water, a sandy bottom and the steady north-easterly alizé blowing at 20–35 knots most mornings — conditions that allow beginners to progress quickly and advanced riders to practise freestyle and foiling manoeuvres without ocean swell.
Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) feed in the shallows of the southern lagoon year-round, with numbers peaking in winter. A short 4x4 drive south of town brings you to the flats at Imlili, where hundreds of birds can be watched at close range.
Dakhla's fishing fleet brings in sea bream, grouper, octopus and sea bass each morning. The simple restaurants at the port grill fish to order; the catch-of-the-day set menu is one of the best-value meals in Morocco.
The hammada east of the lagoon gives way to crescent dunes accessible by 4x4; the vast, empty landscape at sunset — with the lagoon glowing below — is the visual centrepiece of a Dakhla stay.

November through April delivers the most consistent wind (20–35 knots most days) and comfortable air temperatures of 20–26°C. May to October is quieter, lighter on wind, and popular with travellers seeking empty beaches and solitude rather than sport.
