Why Casablanca
For long-haul travellers, Casablanca is often where Morocco — and the desert trip — begins, simply because it has the country's biggest international airport (CMN). It is not the romantic Morocco of the dunes; it's a working modern metropolis of art-deco facades, an Atlantic corniche and the vast Hassan II Mosque on the water. Most desert travellers arrive here and transfer straight on — to Marrakech and the southern dune route, or to Fes and the Fes–Merzouga road. We build it in as a half-day for those who want to see the Hassan II Mosque before heading for the sand.

Do I need to spend time in Casablanca on a desert trip?+
Not much — a half-day around the Hassan II Mosque is plenty. Most desert travellers land at CMN and transfer onward to Marrakech (for the southern dune route) or Fes (for the Fes–Merzouga road) the same day.
Should I fly into Casablanca or Marrakech for the Sahara?+
Casablanca (CMN) has more long-haul flights but adds a transfer; Marrakech (RAK) puts you right at the southern desert gateway. We often book open-jaw: into one, out of the other, so the desert route never doubles back.
