Why Atlas Mountains
The High Atlas is the great barrier between Marrakech and the Sahara — every desert route from the city climbs over it on the Tizi n'Tichka pass before dropping to the kasbah road and the dunes. Many travellers turn that crossing into a stop of its own. Within 60 minutes of Marrakech you reach Imlil at 1,740m, surrounded by Berber villages, walnut and cherry orchards, and trails to Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), the highest peak in North Africa. The Atlas works as a green, cool prelude to the desert heat: a day trip, a mountain-lodge weekend, or a proper 2–3 day trek with guides and mules before you continue south to the sand.

Two-day mule-supported ascent (4,167m) — non-technical in summer, ice axe and crampons in winter. A high-mountain bookend to a desert journey.
Tizi n'Tichka: the road to the desert
The 2,260m pass the southern dune routes follow — Berber villages, switchbacks and the first kasbahs of the pre-Sahara dropping away on the far side toward Ouarzazate.

Can you climb Toubkal without a guide?+
Since the 2018 incident a licensed guide is mandatory. We use a small panel of certified local mountain guides we've worked with for years.
Do I cross the Atlas on the way to the Sahara?+
Yes — from Marrakech every desert route climbs the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka pass before descending to Ouarzazate and the kasbah road to the dunes. Adding a night or a Toubkal trek turns that crossing into a cool-mountain highlight before the desert heat.
