Three very different 'deserts' are sold from Marrakech, and they are not the same thing. Agafay is a rocky stone desert minutes from the city; Zagora and Merzouga are true Saharan sand, reached after a long drive south. Here is an honest three-way comparison so you pick the right one for your time.

About 45 minutes from Marrakech, the Agafay is a rocky hammada (stone desert), not sand dunes. It gives a desert atmosphere with Atlas views and is ideal for a half-day or a sunset dinner at a camp — but it is not the Sahara, and there are no big dunes.
Zagora, in the Draa valley, is the closest real Saharan desert: smaller, gentler dunes but a genuine night under the stars, doable as a 2-day / 1-night trip from Marrakech. The compromise for travellers short on time who still want to sleep in the desert.
Merzouga sits beneath Erg Chebbi, whose dunes reach around 150 metres — the dramatic, postcard Sahara. It is further, so it needs a 3-day / 2-night trip, but it is the quintessential desert experience and the one most travellers picture.
Half a day or one night: Agafay. Two days: Zagora. Three days: Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. The more time you give the desert, the bigger and more spectacular the dunes you reach.
The most common disappointment is booking 'a desert tour' expecting tall dunes and getting the Agafay stone desert. Agafay is beautiful and convenient, but if towering golden dunes are the dream, you need Zagora (modest) or, better, Merzouga.
If you can spare three days, Merzouga is the clear winner. With only two days, Zagora delivers a real desert night. With only an afternoon or one night, Agafay is the stylish, easy option — just know it is stone, not Sahara sand.
