How to visit the Sahara Desert

In Morocco you reach the Sahara by road: there is no train to the dunes. Most visitors go to Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, about 560 km from Marrakech or 470 km from Fes, and spend a night in a desert camp. Here is how to choose the dunes, the route, the way of travelling and the season.

Step by step

How to visit the Sahara in Morocco

01Plan

Choose your dunes

Erg Chebbi at Merzouga has the tallest, most accessible dunes and the widest choice of camps. Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid is wilder and more remote, reached by 4x4 off-road. Zagora is closest to Marrakech, but its dunes are small.

02Plan

Allow enough days

From Marrakech, Merzouga is about 8 hours 30 minutes of driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, so three days and two nights is the comfortable minimum. From Fes it is about 6 hours 30 minutes through the Middle Atlas, and two or three days works.

03Getting there

Go with a tour or a private driver

Most people visit on a desert tour, which bundles the drive, the overnight stops, the camel ride and the camp. A private tour lets you set the pace and the stops; shared group tours cost less but follow a fixed schedule.

04Getting there

Or drive yourself

The roads to Merzouga are paved, so a hire car works for confident drivers. You leave the car at the camp's meeting point on the edge of the dunes, and the camp takes you in by camel or 4x4. Book the camp ahead and confirm where to meet.

05Getting there

Or take the bus

Long-distance coaches run to Merzouga and nearby Rissani, including overnight services; check current CTM and Supratours timetables. It is the cheapest way, but you will need to arrange a camp that collects you, and the trip takes a long day each way.

06Experience

Spend the night in a desert camp

The heart of a visit is the evening: a camel ride or walk into the dunes at sunset, dinner at camp, a sky full of stars, and sunrise from the top of a dune. Camps range from simple tents with shared facilities to private tents with bathrooms.

07When

Pick the right season

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer days are very hot, so plan activities for early morning and evening. Winter days are mild but nights can drop below freezing, so choose a camp with warm bedding.

08Prepare

Pack for heat and cold

Bring a scarf against sun and wind-blown sand, sunglasses, sunscreen, a warm layer for the night, a torch and closed shoes for the dunes. Leave most luggage in the vehicle and take a small overnight bag to camp.

09Route

Add the sights on the way

The road from Marrakech passes Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the Dadès and Todra gorges; from Fes it crosses the cedar forests near Ifrane and the Ziz valley. These stops are why the journey takes several days.

Frequently asked

How do you get to the Sahara Desert in Morocco?

By road. Most visitors travel to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes on a desert tour from Marrakech or Fes, by private car with a driver, by hire car or by long-distance bus, then spend the night in a desert camp.

How many days do you need to visit the Sahara?

From Marrakech, three days and two nights is the practical minimum for Merzouga. From Fes, two to three days. A one-day trip from Marrakech does not reach the Sahara; the Agafay desert near Marrakech is rocky, not sand dunes.

Can you visit the Sahara without a tour?

Yes. You can drive to Merzouga on paved roads or take a bus, then book a desert camp directly. A tour or private driver simply handles the long drive and the logistics for you.

Is Merzouga in the Sahara Desert?

Yes. Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, a sea of sand dunes at the north-western edge of the Sahara in south-eastern Morocco.

When is the best time to visit the Sahara in Morocco?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable. Summer is very hot by day and winter nights can be freezing.
