The two classic desert trips from Marrakech go to different places: Merzouga, beneath the towering dunes of Erg Chebbi, or Zagora, in the gentler Draa-valley desert. The right choice comes down to how many days you have and how dramatic you want the dunes. Here is an honest comparison.

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, whose dunes rise to around 150 metres and shift from gold to deep orange through the day — the postcard Sahara. It is the more dramatic, more photographed choice, with camel treks, sunrise over the sand and camps deep among the dunes.
Zagora, in the Draa valley, has smaller, less dramatic dunes and a quieter, more laid-back feel. Its big advantage is distance: it is much closer to Marrakech, which is why it works as a shorter trip.
Zagora is the classic 2-day / 1-night trip (the desert is reachable in a long day's drive). Merzouga is further, so it is a 3-day / 2-night trip. If you have three days, Merzouga and Erg Chebbi are the clear winner; if you only have two, Zagora delivers a real desert night without the longer haul.
Both routes cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka and pass Aït Ben Haddou. The Merzouga road continues through the Dadès and Todra gorges and the date palms of the Tafilalt; the Zagora road follows the Draa valley's ribbon of palmeries and kasbahs.
Zagora is quieter and less touristy. Erg Chebbi has more camps and visitors but its sheer scale means it never feels small, and a well-placed camp still gives silence and a sky thick with stars.
If you can spare three days, choose Merzouga / Erg Chebbi for the full, breathtaking Sahara. If you only have two days, Zagora is the sensible way to still sleep in the desert under the stars. For an even shorter taste near Marrakech, the Agafay stone desert is the fallback — but it is not true Saharan dunes.
If you have three days, Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are the better choice — taller, more dramatic dunes and the quintessential Sahara. Zagora is better only if you are limited to two days, as it is closer to Marrakech and works as a 2-day trip.
Zagora is the standard 2-day / 1-night desert trip from Marrakech; Merzouga, being further, is a 3-day / 2-night trip. The extra day for Merzouga buys the much bigger Erg Chebbi dunes.
The Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga rise to around 150 metres and are far more dramatic. Zagora's dunes in the Draa valley are smaller and gentler, which is part of its quieter character.
Zagora is worth it if you only have two days and still want to sleep in the desert. But if you can manage three days, most travellers find Merzouga and Erg Chebbi well worth the extra drive for the far more spectacular dunes.
