### Marrakech
Marrakech is Morocco's most-visited city and the practical base for most private tours — about a 90-minute flight from many European capitals, and roughly three hours by road from the High Atlas, the Agafay desert and the Atlantic. ### Essaouira

### Atlas Mountains

### Tangier

### Casablanca
Casablanca is Morocco's largest city and main international airport hub (Mohammed V, CMN). ### Rabat

### Meknes
Meknes is the most underrated of Morocco's four imperial cities. It is the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss, about 30 km away. Nearest airport: Fes-Sais (FEZ) plus about an hour. ### Agadir
Rebuilt after a 1960 earthquake, Agadir is Morocco's premier beach resort — a long crescent of golden sand, a palm-lined promenade, and over 300 days of sunshine a year. ### Dades & Todra Gorges
Between Ouarzazate and the Sahara, the kasbah road threads two dramatic canyons: the Todra Gorge narrows to a slot about 300 m high and barely 10 m wide, popular with climbers; the Dades Gorge twists through rose-coloured rock past the famous hairpin switchbacks. In between lie palm oases, mudbrick kasbahs and the Valley of Roses around Kelaat M'Gouna. Nearest airports: Ouarzazate (OZZ) or Errachidia (ERH). ### Ouzoud Falls
The Cascades d'Ouzoud, about three hours from Marrakech in the Middle Atlas, are Morocco's highest waterfalls — a triple drop of about 110 m into a green gorge, often crowned with rainbows in the afternoon. A shaded path passes olive groves and old mills, with wild Barbary macaques along the way. Nearest airport: Marrakech Menara (RAK) plus about 2h30. Best time: March-June and September-October.

### Agafay Desert

### Taroudant
Taroudant sits in the broad Souss plain at the foot of the High Atlas, about 80 km east of Agadir and 230 km south of Marrakech. ### Taghazout

### Dakhla
Dakhla is a peninsula town on Morocco's far-southern Atlantic coast, roughly 1,700 km south of Casablanca and 550 km south of Agadir, extending into a 40 km lagoon sheltered from the open ocean by a narrow sand tongue. The lagoon's flat, shallow water and persistent north-easterly trade winds (the alize) have made it one of the world's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations, busiest November-April. ### Skoura
Skoura is a palm oasis and village about 42 km east of Ouarzazate on the kasbah road, in the Draa-Tafilalet region at around 1,200 m. The oasis holds hundreds of thousands of date palms watered by ancient khettaras (underground channels), and within it stand some of the finest earthen kasbahs on the southern circuit — including the 17th-century Kasbah Amerdil (Amerhidil), which appears on the 50-dirham banknote. Quieter than Ait Ben Haddou, it works as a short detour or an overnight stop before the Dades Gorge. Nearest airport: Ouarzazate (OZZ). Best time: March-May and September-November.

### Tinghir
Tinghir (also written Tinerhir) is a market town and oasis at about 1,342 m in the Draa-Tafilalet region, on the northern edge of a wide date-palm oasis watered by the Todra river. It sits roughly 180 km east of Ouarzazate and 33 km west of the Todra Gorge's most dramatic narrows, making it the principal overnight base for the canyon. Its terraced palmery — some 50 km long — the Glaoui kasbah on the hill, and the weekly Tuesday souk make it rewarding in its own right. Nearest airports: Ouarzazate (OZZ) or Errachidia (ERH). Best time: March-May and September-November.

### Oualidia
Oualidia is a small coastal resort about 200 km south of Casablanca and 180 km north of Essaouira, built around a natural tidal lagoon formed by a rocky headland and a sandbar. The calm, shallow water is ideal for oyster farming, and Oualidia oysters have been Morocco's most celebrated shellfish since the 1950s. The westernmost significant city of the Roman Empire and capital of the province of Mauretania Tingitana, its excavated ruins cover 42 hectares and include the Capitoline Temple, the Arch of Caracalla, the mosaic floors of the House of Orpheus, and the colonnaded Decumanus Maximus. Three kilometres away, Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is Morocco's holiest town — the burial place of Moulay Idriss I, founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who arrived from Arabia in 788 AD. ## Practical facts about Morocco

- Visa: Citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, the European Union/Schengen area, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan (and many other countries) can enter Morocco visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days. A passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival is the safe standard. Always confirm current rules before travel.
- Currency: The Moroccan dirham (MAD). The dirham is a closed currency, generally obtained on arrival via ATMs or exchange rather than abroad. Cards are accepted in cities and larger establishments; cash is needed in the medina and rural areas.
